Carbon Zero Challenge

Sean led the bid for this national programme, the third Carbon Challenge scheme in the country and the first in the North.

This pioneering residential - led mixed use scheme of the highest quality and design standards delivered over 500 new homes to zero carbon standard and BREEAM “Excellent” in terms of the commercial development.

The scale of the scheme allowed us to propose a single 125m high 2MW wind turbine within our bid capable of generating more than sufficient power to both the residential and commercial units, the surplus being available to sell back to the grid.

Other features of our bid included:

  • 132 new affordable homes managed by Arena Housing group
  • Commercial element delivery by Network Space
  • Kingspan Tek Building System – high performance Structurally Insulated Panels for upper floors, walls and roofs
  • Grey water re-cycling and rainwater harvesting
  • Heat recovery ventilation systems
  • Intelligent electronic control systems - smart meters
  • SUDS drainage system comprising open ponds, reed beds and streams

Strata were one of the two final bidders however unfortunately the scheme was put on hold in 2009 due to the housing recession.
